Etymology: < French beau idéal the ideal Beautiful, ‘the Beautiful’ as an abstract conception; beau being the noun, and idéal the adjective. But in English, where the adjective usually precedes the noun, there has been a tendency to take ideal as the noun part, whence the current usage; compare ideal adj. and n.
