Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pommer.
Etymology: < German Pommer (1619; compare earlier pummer (1604), pommert (16th cent.)), variant of Bombart , Bomhart (Middle High German bumhart ), probably < Middle French bombarde , bombare (see bombard n.). Compare Swedish pommer (1773).
Music.
A (usually bass, alto, or tenor) shawm.

1878 H. H. Statham in G. Grove Dict. Music I. 151 A class of instruments named bombards, pommers, or brummers..seems to have been the immediate predecessor of the bassoon.
1884 Encycl. Brit. XVII. 706/2 The little schalmey and tenor pommer seem to have disappeared in the 17th century.
1911 E. F. Cook Dict. Mus. Terms 202 Pommer, an ancient wooden wind reed instrument of various sizes.
1950 Oxf. Junior Encycl. IX. 487/1 The lower ones were called ‘pommers’ and ‘bombards’. In the 17th and 18th centuries hautboys..developed from shawms, and 18th-century bassoons from the pommers.
1977 Early Music 5 347/1 A collection of different pirouettes may be useful. I have five (made from corks) for my soprano pommer.
1985 J. Kerman Musicol. 187 Some of these instruments do not survive outside of museums—examples are the crwth, the pommer, and the viola bastarda.
