Etymology: < French poncif bad drawing or painting lacking in originality (1821), cliché, stereotype (1866 or earlier), transferred uses of poncif stencil (1551 in Middle French; < poncer (see pounce v.2) + -if -ive suffix). Compare cliché n. and adj.
Conventional or hackneyed art, ideas, etc.; cliché, stereotype; an instance of this.
