单词 portlof
释义

portlofn.

Forms: Middle English portelove.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French portelof.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French portelof (1382 in Middle French) < porte- porte- comb. form + lof (see luff n.1).It is uncertain whether the following should be taken as showing the Anglo-Norman or Middle English word:1294–5 Naval Acct. in B. Sandahl Middle Eng. Sea Terms (1958) II. 84 Item, pro ij Carpentariis ad faciendum porteloff, xiiij s. vij d.1296 in Archaeologia Aeliana (1926) 4 184 In vj lignis emptis de Waltero le Keu ad port lofe, iij s.1345–7 Naval Acct. in B. Sandahl Middle Eng. Sea Terms (1958) II. 84 Item, pro vna pecia meremij empta ibidem pro emendacione Porteloues nauis, vj d.1397–8 Naval Acct. in B. Sandahl Middle Eng. Sea Terms (1958) II. 84 In..expensis super le portloves dicte navis. Even quot. 1432-7 cannot be taken as unambiguously demonstrating that the Anglo-Norman word was borrowed into Middle English. The collocation with the English formation fforlokes pins or wedges used for locking something in place (see Middle Eng. Dict. s.v. fōr(e-lok n.1) is suggestive, but not conclusive.
Nautical. Obsolete.
A support for a spar or boom used to extend the lower edge of a square sail when sailing into the wind.
