Portman (1225), Walterus Portman (1296), and as an element in place names, as e.g. in the following:1254 in C. Gross Gild Merchant (1890) II. 203 Cum prato quod uocatur portmanebroc.

In or with reference to pre-Conquest times: a citizen of a town; a burgess or burgher. After the Norman Conquest: any of a small group of citizens chosen to administer the affairs of a borough or town.
