单词 portmoot
释义

portmootn.

Brit. /ˈpɔːtmuːt/, U.S. /ˈpɔrtˌmut/
Forms:

α. Middle English portmot, Middle English– portmote, 1500s porthmouth (perhaps transmission error), 1600s portmoote, 1700s 1900s– portmoot.

β. Middle English portemot, Middle English 1600s portemote, 1500s portemounte (perhaps transmission error); N.E.D. (1907) also records a form early Middle English portimote.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: port n.2, moot n.1, i-moot n.
Etymology: In α. forms < port n.2 + moot n.1 In β. forms < port n.2 + i-moot n. Compare post-classical Latin portemotus , portimotus , portmotus (from 12th cent. in British sources). Compare earlier portmanmoot n.Use of the word in sense 2 apparently arises as a result of misinterpretation of the first element as port n.1 (compare portreeve n. and port-sale n.). There is no evidence of an Old English form *port-gemōt ; however, compare Old English burh-gemōt , in the same sense (see burgh-mote n. at borough n. Compounds 1).
1. The court of a borough or city (used esp. of cities and boroughs in the County Palatine of Chester). Now historical.
