Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French portulan; Italian portolano.
Etymology: < French portulan (1577 in Middle French in a translation of an Italian text) and its etymon Italian portolano (1440 as portollan ; earlier in sense ‘port superintendent’ (a1347 as portolano )), apparently < porto port n.1 + -ano -an suffix, with insertion of -l- probably after ortolano gardener (see ortolan n.). Compare post-classical Latin portulanus (13th cent.). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) indicates the pronunciations (pōə·ɹtiŭlăn) /ˈpɔətjʊlən/ and (pōəɹtolā·no) /ˌpɔətəʊˈlɑːnəʊ/ for the forms portulan and portulano respectively.
