c. As a postmodifier, esp. in house beautiful and body beautiful. Originally used for emphasis; now used to imply the obsessive pursuit of an idealized form or vision. In Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (1678), Christian stays at ‘a very stately Palace..the name whereof was Beautiful’, which is referred to in Pilgrim's Progress 2nd Part (1684) as ‘the House Beautiful’, and hence also by readers of, commentators on, and adapters of Pilgrim's Progress. House beautiful thus became a set phrase in the 18th and 19th cent., in early use alluding or directly referring to Bunyan. Later uses may have been influenced by the interior design magazine House Beautiful, first published in 1896, or by various books of the same title.
