Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: port n.2, soken n.
Etymology: < port n.2 + soken n., after Anglo-Norman portsokne (c1215 or earlier) and post-classical Latin portsokna (1275, c1324 in British sources).Compare the following examples of post-classical Latin portsoka (1155, 1256, 1419 in British sources; here the second element is post-classical Latin soca soke n.1):a1189 in W. Somner Treat. Gavelkind (1726) 136 Infra urbem, & in Portsoka.a1272 in W. Somner Treat. Gavelkind (1726) 135 Nullus de civitate vel Portsoka sua. It is uncertain whether the following should be taken as showing the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:1226–7 in W. Somner Gavelkind (1660) 135 Et quod infra muros civitatis, neque in Portsokne, nemo capiat hospitium per vim.
