Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pontifier.
Etymology: < French pontifier (1866 in this sense; earlier in senses ‘to rise to the office or dignity of Pope’ (a1436) and ‘to perform the functions of a pontiff’ (1801)) < post-classical Latin pontificare pontificate v.; compare -fy suffix. Compare later pontificate v. 2.
Usually depreciative. Now rare.
intransitive. To assume an arrogant air of authority; to speak dogmatically or pompously. Cf. pontificate v. 2.
