Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pontil.
Etymology: < French pontil (1723 in this sense; also as †pointil ), literally ‘little point’ < pointe point n.1 + -il , diminutive suffix (see -el suffix2). Compare Spanish puntel (1598 or earlier in this sense). Compare also (in different sense) Middle French pontil a lead strip used to fasten each of the different panes in stained glass windows (16th cent. in this sense; literally ‘little bridge’; < Old Occitan pontil ( < pont pont n.1 + -il , diminutive suffix: see -el suffix2)). Compare earlier punty n.Compare earlier use of ponteglo in this sense (apparently < Italian ponteglo):1788 Chambers's Cycl. (new ed.) at Glass They dip an iron rod, or ponteglo, in the melting-pots.
Glass-making.
Esp. in the manufacture of crown glass: an iron rod used to hold or twirl molten glass for the purpose of shaping. Also called punty.
