Etymology: < French pot pourri dish of mixed meats (1564 in Middle French), collection or miscellany (1587), medley of tunes (1605), literary miscellany (1654), mixed petals for perfume (1690) < pot pot n.1 + pourri , past participle of pourrir to be rotten (see pourry adj.), after Spanish olla podrida olla podrida n.In form pot porride perhaps influenced by Spanish podrida (in olla podrida: see above). The plural pots-pourris corresponds to the French plural form.
