Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin possident-, possidēns.
Etymology: < classical Latin possident-, possidēns possessor, use as noun of present participle of possidēre possess v.; in post-classical Latin also used as adjective in sense possesssing (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian). Compare earlier possessioner n., possessor n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǫ·sidĕnt) /ˈpɒsɪdənt/.
