Etymology: < German post festum (1872 in the passage translated in quot. 1887), transferred use of post-classical Latin post festum after the feast (5th cent. with reference to religious festivals, usually specified, e.g. post festum Sancti Petri after the feast of St Peter) < classical Latin post after (see post- prefix) + festum festival, feast-day (see feast n.). Compare earlier post factum adv., post facto adv.
