Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin *pondrellum.
Etymology: Probably < an unattested post-classical Latin form *pondrellum (compare poudrellum avoirdupois (c1280 in a British source; probably an error)) < classical Latin ponder- , pondus pondus n. + -ellum -ellum suffix. Compare post-classical Latin ponderale place where weights are kept, avoirdupois (see ponderal adj.). Compare earlier pounder n.2Sense 2 may represent a different word.
Obsolete.
