单词 powis
释义

powisn.

Brit. /ˈpəʊɪs/, /ˈpaʊɪs/, U.S. /ˈpaʊɪs/, /ˈpoʊəs/
Forms:

α. 1700s powies, 1700s powese, 1800s powise, 1800s– powis, 1900s– powisce.

β. 1800s paui, 1800s powee, 1900s– powie.

Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Dutch paauwies, pauwis, pauwies.
Etymology: < Suriname Dutch paauwies (1763 or earlier), pauwis (1770 or earlier), pauwies (1835 or earlier; also powese (1796; apparently influenced by English), powis , powees (both 1854 or earlier)), of uncertain origin, probably ultimately < Dutch pauw , †paauw peacock (see po n.1), perhaps after an (unidentified) Papiamentu word, or perhaps via an (unattested) Papiamentu borrowing of the Dutch word: see note. Compare earlier pauxi n. (compare also the Spanish and post-classical Latin forms cited at that entry). For the apparent motivation of the Dutch name, compare the following quot.:1763 M. Houttuyn Natuurlyke Hist. Zy vliegen gaarn hoog en springen van den eenen tak op den anderen in de Boomen, gelyk de Paauwen.[The curassows are so called because they do not only look very much like a peacock, but are also able to raise their tail feathers in a way similar to turkeys. This is especially true with regard to their crest feathers. They like to fly up high and jump from one branch to another in a tree, as peacocks do.] In form powisce perhaps after Suriname Dutch powisi (1908 or earlier as powiesie ; < Sranan powisi < Suriname Dutch paauwies , pauwies ). The β. forms apparently result from reanalysis of final -s, -se as a plural morpheme.
In Guyana: a curassow.
