单词 powysian
释义

Powysianadj.n.

Brit. /paʊˈɪsɪən/, U.S. /paʊˈisiən/
Forms: 1800s Powisian, 1800s– Powysian.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Powys , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < Powys, the name of an area in eastern Wales (see below; < post-classical Latin pagensis (adjective) of or relating to the country or a country district: see peasant n.) + -ian suffix. Compare Welsh Powysaidd, adjective (20th cent.), also Powysion (c1300, rare), Powyswyr (13th cent., rare), plural nouns, all in sense ‘inhabitants of Powys’, Powyseg (noun) Welsh dialect of Powys (18th–19th cent.).Powys was the name of a kingdom (later princedom) of Wales until the English conquest in 1282 (though part of Gwynedd for some of that period) and remained an unofficial name for the region. It became official again with the 1974 government reform, when the counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire, and Brecknockshire became districts of the new administrative county of Powys, which in 1996 became a unitary authority (principal area) of Wales. The name is first mentioned in the 9th cent. (Old Welsh powys, post-classical Latin pouois, regio povisorum), though Welsh examples from poetry may ultimately date back as far as the 7th cent. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) also gives the pronunciation (pōuˌi·siăn) /pəʊˈɪsɪən/.
