单词 acridity
释义

acridityn.

Brit. /əˈkrɪdᵻti/, U.S. /əˈkrɪdᵻdi/, /æˈkrɪdᵻdi/
Forms: 1500s acredyte, 1600s acredity, 1700s– acridity.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: acrid adj., -ity suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < acrid adj. + -ity suffix, although attested considerably earlier than the adjective. Compare later acritude n. and acrity n., which reflect Latin formations. Compare also slightly earlier acrimony n.Although quot. 1547 at sense 1 is surprisingly early, there seems no clear reason for supposing that it does not show a genuine example of this word (as suggested by N.E.D. (1884) at cited word).
1. The quality of being acrid; a combination of bitterness to the taste with irritancy or corrosion to the mucous membrane; pungent, inflammatory, or corrosive bitterness. Also: an instance of this.
