Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: pre- prefix, contest n.1; Latin precontestis.
Etymology: Either < pre- prefix + contest n.1, after post-classical Latin precontestis, or independently < post-classical Latin precontestis previous fellow witness (1443, 1510 in British sources; also precontestus , 1548 in the passage translated in quot. 1996).
