Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praecōnium.
Etymology: < classical Latin praecōnium action of announcing or proclaiming, public announcement, public praise or commendation (see note) < praecōn- , praecō public crier, herald (perhaps < prae- pre- prefix + the stem either of dicere to say (see dictum n.) or of vocāre to call (see vocate v.) + -oon suffix, with loss of middle syllable) + -ium -y suffix4. Compare preconious adj.The use of classical Latin praecōnium to denote public commendation may have arisen from the practice of public heralds in the theatre who were accustomed to sing the praises of the plays they were announcing.
