Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: post v.1, it pron.
Etymology: < post v.1 + it pron.
A proprietary name for: a small piece of notepaper (often yellow) with a lightly adhesive strip along one edge of the reverse side, enabling it to be stuck to a surface as a marker or for messages, comments, or reminders, and to be easily removed when necessary. Cf. sticky n. 1b. More fully Post-it note.

1975 Office Sept. 188/2 Commercial Tape Div., 3M Co.,..makes Post-It products with a long-lasting adhesive surface for repeated mounting and removal of materials without tearing or defacing them.
