Etymology: < French potelot (1732 or earlier; recorded as a foreign word 1694 in the passage translated in quot. 1712) < Dutch potlood (see pot lead n.). The French term was originally applied to both molybdenum sulphide and graphite: see quots. 1712 and 1788 and compare note at plumbago n.
