Etymology: < pouter n.1 + pigeon n. Compare earlier pouter n.1 2, pouting horseman (see quot. 1693 at pouting adj.), poutish dragoon (see quot. 1725 at poutish adj.), pouting pigeon (see quot. 1760 at pouting adj.).
1. A domestic pigeon of a breed characterized by a greatly inflatable crop (cf. cropper n.1). Also figurative: a boastful or arrogant person, a show-off.
