Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin potentia , -ate suffix3, -ing suffix2; potentiate v., -ing suffix2.
Etymology: In quot. 1656 apparently < classical Latin potentia potency n. + -ate suffix3 + -ing suffix2. In later use < potentiate v. + -ing suffix2.
Now chiefly Pharmacology and Biology.
That makes something possible or powerful; (in later use) spec. of, relating to, or effecting potentiation of a drug or other agent; enhancing or increasing a biological effect.
