In later use: spec. any member of a group (now the family Poxviridae) of large, enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses which are pathogens of vertebrates and insects, causing the pox diseases of mammals and birds and various other diseases (often affecting the skin).The family Poxviridae now includes the genera Orthopoxvirus, Parapoxvirus (orf virus, etc.), Leporipoxvirus (myxoma virus, etc.), Avipoxvirus (fowlpox virus, etc.), Suipoxvirus (swinepox virus), Molluscipoxvirus (molluscum contagiosum virus), Capripoxvirus (sheeppox virus, etc.), Yatapoxvirus (Yaba monkey tumour virus, tanapox virus), and three genera of insect viruses ( Entomopoxvirus A, B, C).
