Etymology: < post-classical Latin posthumus (see posthumous adj.).In form posthuma (in sense 1) after post-classical Latin posthuma , use as noun (short for opera posthuma posthumous works) of neuter plural of posthumus ; in form posthumi (in sense 2), use as noun of masculine plural of posthumus . The form posthumi in sense 1 is apparently irregular.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin posthumus (see posthumous adj. and n.). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǫ·stiŭmɒ̆s) /ˈpɒstjʊməs/. Compare the following earlier use as an epithet:a1464 J. Capgrave Abbreuiacion of Cron. (Cambr. Gg.4.12) (1983) 160 This same Lodewyk had to wyues: on was dowtir to þe duke of Borgayn..anoþir was dowtir to þe kyng of Hungarie, of whom cam Jon, cleped Postumus.
