单词 potro
释义

potron.

Brit. /ˈpɒtrəʊ/, U.S. /ˈpɑˌtroʊ/
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish potro.
Etymology: < Spanish potro colt, foal (940; 924 as poltro ), apparently ultimately < a post-classical Latin derivative of classical Latin pullus foal (for attested forms see poltroon n.), although this presents phonological difficulties. Compare French poutre (see pautre n.), Occitan poltre, Catalan potro (15th cent.), poltro (1700; now usually poltre), Portuguese poldro (a1230; 1031 as poledro), Italian puledro, poledro (13th cent.).
In South America: a colt, a young horse; a pony.
