Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin posticus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin posticus (1849 or earlier in botanical use: see note; spec. use of classical Latin postīcus situated at the back, rear (see postic adj.)) + -ous suffix.Compare the following example of post-classical Latin posticus in an English context in botanical use:1849 J. H. Balfour Man. Bot. 412 They [sc. the anthers] are extrorse (outwardly), or posticæ (posticus, behind), when they open on the outer surface.
Botany.
Of an anther or its dehiscence: opening outwards; extrorse. Also (of various plant parts, esp. those of a corolla or calyx) : located on the side closer to the axis. Cf. anticous adj.
