Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French postille; Latin postilla.
Etymology: < Middle French postille marginal note or comment (1357; French postille , now usually denoting a literal gloss of Old Testament texts) and its etymon post-classical Latin postilla note, commentary (a1294 in a British source), (usually plural) set of such comments, commentary (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources), probably < post illa after those (in the phrase post illa verba textus after those words of the text (4th cent.)) < classical Latin post after (see post- prefix) + illa , neuter plural of ille that man, he (see illeism n.). Compare classical Latin postillā afterwards (Plautus). The post-classical Latin word was also borrowed into other Romance languages; compare Catalan postil·la (1407 as †postilla ), Spanish postilla (early 15th cent. or earlier; also as postila (1508 or earlier)), Portuguese postila (1597 as †postilla ), Italian postilla marginal note or comment (end of the 14th cent. or earlier in this sense; earlier in sense ‘reflected image’ (a1321)). Compare also later apostil n.
Now archaic or historical.
