Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin postillat- , postillare ; postil n., -ate suffix3.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin postillat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of postillare postil v. In later use probably re-formed < postil n. + -ate suffix3; compare postillating adj., postillating n. Compare earlier postil v., and also postillize v.
Now rare.
