Compare also goodsire n.Compare Anglo-Norman and Old French bel sire , Middle French, French beau sire , respectful form of address, lit. ‘fair sir’ (compare beausire n.). Earlier currency of the English formation is perhaps implied by the following earlier use as a surname: Johannes Belsire (1275), although this is more likely to reflect the Anglo-Norman phrase (compare e.g. the name of Geoffrey Beusire (1226)).
