Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin postpraedicamentum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin postpraedicamentum (1489 in this sense; a1142 in Abelard with reference to a different Aristotelian text seen as calling for treatment after the ten predicaments, namely the first three chapters of the De interpretatione) < classical Latin post- post- prefix + post-classical Latin praedicamentum predicament n. Compare Middle French, French postpredicament (early 15th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from the 20th cent.).
Logic.
Usually in plural. Any one of the five relations considered, after the predicaments themselves, at the end of the work on the ten predicaments or categories attributed to Aristotle (see predicament n. 1, category n. 1a). Also in extended and figurative use.The five postpredicaments were: 1. opposites (ἀντικείμενα), of four kinds; 2. the conceptions before or priority (πρότερον), of five kinds; 3. at once or simultaneity (ἅμα), of two kinds; 4. motion (κίνησις), of six kinds; and 5. having (ἔχειν), of eight kinds.
