Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: pottingary n.
Etymology: Shortened < pottingary n. Compare later pothecar n.In forms potinger and pottinger perhaps by association with pottinger n. Apparently revived by Scott (compare quot. 1814, which is a direct quotation from R. Lindsay Hist. & Cron. Scotl.: see quot. a1578 at pottingary n. 1). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation of the last element as (-gə(ɹ)) -/ɡə(r)/ and indicates the stress as ˈpottingar.
Scottish. Obsolete (archaic in later use).
