Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pousse.
Etymology: < French pousse dust, powder, rubbish in fine particles (second half of the 14th cent. in Middle French as poulce ; now chiefly regional), alteration of an apparently unattested Old French form *pous < classical Latin pulvis dust, powder (see pulver n.); compare Old Occitan, Occitan pols powder (12th cent. in the phrase pols d'encens powderized incense), dust (13th cent.), Catalan pols dust (13th cent.), and also Spanish polvo (c1200, in early use chiefly in plural; back-formation < polvos < post-classical Latin *pulvus , alteration of classical Latin pulvis ). Perhaps compare earlier pouse n.In form poust with excrescent t.
