Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Pouilly Fumé.
Etymology: < French Pouilly Fumé (1936 or earlier; compare quot. 1935) < Pouilly (in Pouilly-sur-Loire , the name of a town in the Nièvre department of France, where the wine is produced) + fumé smoked (see fumé adj.), so called on account of the wine's smoky flavour. Compare earlier Pouilly n.
A dry, perfumed white wine produced near Pouilly-sur-Loire, France.
