单词 poulet
释义

pouletn.

Brit. /ˈpuːleɪ/, /puːˈleɪ/, U.S. /puˈleɪ/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French poulet.
Etymology: < French poulet chicken (13th cent. in Old French), written message (1556 in Middle French as poullaict ), love letter (1588 in Middle French): see pullet n. The origin of the French transferred uses is unclear; they perhaps arose from the comparison of the shape of a folded letter to a chicken wing. With sense 2 compare borrowing of French poulet as part of French culinary compounds:1861 I. M. Beeton Bk. Househ. Managem. xxi. 474 Poulet Aux Cressons... A fowl, a large bunch of water-cresses, 3 tablespoonfuls of vinegar, ¼ pint of gravy.1894 G. Peel Life's Enchanted Cup viii. 87 She made a delicious Poulet Marengo with a suspicion of garlic in it.1978 Chicago June 218/2 Poulet Provençal ($6.50) comes with pearl onions, fresh mushrooms, olives, tomato purée. The following apparently represents an English speaker's pronunciation of such a French compound (perhaps poulet béchamel):1840 W. M. Thackeray Barber Cox in Comic Almanack 9 Eating, for my share,..a pully bashymall, and other French dishes.
