Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French poncille, poncire.
Etymology: < Middle French ponsille, poncille (1564; French †poncille ), variant of poncire (1546; French poncire ) < Old Occitan poncire variety of citron with large fruits, used for making marmalade (1397; also as ponsiri (15th cent.); earlier as pomscir (c1350), pomsire (second half of the 13th cent. or earlier); Occitan ponsire , ponsíri , ponsèri ), probably ultimately < an unattested post-classical Latin form *pomum Syrium , literally ‘Syrian fruit’ ( < classical Latin pōmum fruit (see pomum n.) + Syrium , neuter singular of Syrius (adjective) of or belonging to Syria: see Syry adj.), the fruit being so called on account of its probable country of origin.
Obsolete. rare.
A variety of citron.
