Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit prāṇa.
Etymology: < Sanskrit prāṇa exhalation, breath, breath of life (one of five vital energies) < pra- forth (see pro n.1, adj.1, and prep.) + an- to breathe ( < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin animus : see animus n.). Compare pranayama n.
Hinduism and Yoga.
Breathing, respiration; the breath as the sign of life; the life principle inhabiting all animate things. In meditation: a breath, a single inhalation or (more rarely) exhalation.
