Forms:

α. Middle English prassio, Middle English prassyus, Middle English–1500s 1700s prassius, 1600s–1700s prasius, 1700s prasium.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin prasius; French prase.
Etymology: < classical Latin prasius precious stone of a green colour (Pliny; < ancient Greek πράσιος leek-green < πράσον leek (see prasine n. and adj.) + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives), reinforced in the 18th cent. (in β. forms) by French prase (1755; earlier as prasse (1528 in Middle French)). Compare Anglo-Norman prasius, prasie (respectively second half of the 12th cent. and c1300, both in apparently isolated attestations), Spanish prasio (1494 or earlier), Italian prasio (14th cent. as prassio). The form prassio is apparently after the Latin dative or ablative singular form.
