Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek πράσιος , didymium n.

Etymology: < ancient Greek πράσιος leek-green (see prase n.) + -dymium (in didymium n.), after German Praseodym (C. A. von Welsbach 1885, in Monatshefte f. Chem. 6 490), so called on account of the colour of its salts and its isolation, with neodymium, from the supposed element didymium. Compare neodymium n.With the use of praseo- as a first element compare earlier praseolite n.

1885 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 48 ii. 1113 By repeated crystallisation of a mixture of the double nitrates of lanthanum and didymium with ammonium, the lanthanum salt was obtained pure, whilst the didymium salt separated into the salts of two new elements, neodymium and praseodymium.
