Etymology: < classical Latin praecurs-, past participial stem of praecurrere to run in front of, precede (see precurrent adj.), in post-classical Latin also to act as a precursor (5th cent., of John the Baptist), with remodelling of the second element after course v., discourse v., recourse v.1, etc. Compare earlier precourse n., and later precurse v.
