Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by back-formation. Etymons: pre- prefix, Latin dēcess- , dēcēdere ; predecessor n.
Etymology: Either < pre- prefix + classical Latin dēcess-, past participial stem of dēcēdere to depart, go away (see decease n.), or back-formation < predecessor n. Compare earlier predecessing adj., predecessive adj., predecession n.

transitive. To be the predecessor of; to precede.
