Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pre- prefix, Latin dēcess- , dēcēdere , -ing suffix2; -ing suffix2.
Etymology: Either < pre- prefix + classical Latin dēcess-, past participial stem of dēcēdere to depart, go away (see decease n.) + -ing suffix2, or < predecess- (in predecessor n.) + -ing suffix2. Compare later predecess v., predecessive adj., predecession n.
