单词 prayer wheel
释义

prayer wheeln.

Brit. /ˈprɛː wiːl/, U.S. /ˈprɛr ˌ(h)wil/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Tibetan lexical item. Etymons: prayer n.1, wheel n.
Etymology: < prayer n.1 + wheel n., after Tibetan chos-'khor, itself after Sanskrit dharmacakra, Pali dhammacakka, literally ‘wheel of the Law’.The Sanskrit term may have been coined in the Mahabharata (Vulgate), where it has the sense ‘the whole cycle of duty-bound observances’, and is formed by analogy with kālacakra ‘cycle of the seasons’. The notion of turning the cycle also first appears in this neo-Vedic version of the text. Thus the term was originally metaphorical, and only became concretized in the Tibetan use, by which time the Dharma scroll was in written form.

Cf. prayer cylinder n. at prayer n.1 Compounds 2, praying wheel n. (a) at praying n. Compounds 2. Cf. also mani n.2
