Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praedeterminare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin praedeterminare to state previously or determine beforehand (from c1185 in British sources: see note below) < classical Latin prae- pre- prefix + dētermināre determine v. Compare French prédéterminer (1530 in Middle French).The occurrence of post-classical Latin praedeterminantes in Cyprian De dominica oratione (3rd cent.) is now considered to be a misreading for pridem..determinantes.
1. transitive. To determine or establish (an outcome, course of events, etc.) in advance; to predestine; to decree or decide upon beforehand; to be a predeterminer of or compelling force for.
