单词 pre-eminent
释义

pre-eminentadj.

Brit. /priːˈɛmᵻnənt/, /prɪˈɛmᵻnənt/, U.S. /priˈɛmən(ə)nt/
Forms: late Middle English premynent, late Middle English– pre-eminent, 1500s–1600s preheminent, 1600s–1700s prae-eminent, 1700s praeminent, 1900s preëminent.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French preeminent; Latin praeēminent-, praeēminēns.
Etymology: < Middle French preeminent (first half of the 15th cent.; 1372–4 in use as noun as preeminens (plural); French prééminent ) and its etymon classical Latin praeēminent-, praeēminēns, present participle (also used as adjective) of praeēminēre (also praeminēre : see note) to stand out prominently, to surpass, exceed, be superior to < prae- pre- prefix + ēminēre (see eminent adj.). Compare Catalan preeminent (1474 as preheminent), Spanish preeminente (1449, also †preheminente), Portuguese preeminente (1572), Italian preminente (a1440).Classical Latin praeēminēre is more commonly attested in the form praeminēre, which probably represents prae- + -minēre (in e.g. ēminēre); the form praeēminēre is first unambiguously recorded in post-classical Latin (4th cent.). The h in the form preheminent was inserted to avoid hiatus.
