Etymology: < pre-empt- (in pre-emption n.) + -or suffix. Compare post-classical Latin praeemptor (in an undated glossary; subsequently from 13th cent.). With sense 2 compare earlier pre-empt v. 3. Compare later emptor n.The form pre-empter is also occasionally attested (compare -er suffix1):1962 G. Nicholson Vancouver Island's West Coast 265 A kindly Norwegian pre-empter..assisted them in re-sawing and whittling the boards down to the proper dimensions by hand.
