Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: predominate v., -ion suffix1; French predomination.
Etymology: Either < predominate v. + -ion suffix1, or directly < Middle French predomination (1574; French prédomination ) < predominer predomine v. + -ation -ation suffix. Compare Spanish predominación (1438). Compare earlier predominy n., and also predominance n., predominancy n., predominion n.
