1. A low projecting course of masonry running along the inside of a wall, or round the base of a pillar, in churches, cloisters, etc. Now rare.Quot. a1669 may instead illustrate table-stone: cf. quot. a1669 at table stone n. 2 (which is taken from the same text).

The institution of the Bench table at the Inner Temple initially evolved in the 17th cent. to address less formal aspects of the Inn's government and gradually took over the main matters of its administration from the Inn's parliament.
