Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French prenoter; Latin praenotāre.
Etymology: < Middle French prenoter to note firstly or previously (c1390), to symbolize (c1508) and its etymon classical Latin praenotāre to mark in front, to set out in writing, in post-classical Latin also to predict (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), to note or mention previously (8th cent.; from 10th cent. in British sources) < prae- pre- prefix + notāre note v.2
